Waves in Art: Starry Night: Vincent van Gough

Technically these aren’t waves but waves are always one thing I see in this painting. Part of the wonder in art is that everyone sees & feels differently.

The Starry Night is an oil on canvas by the Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. Painted in June, 1889, it depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. It has been in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City since 1941, It is regarded as among Van Gogh’s finest works,

The big “star” to the right of the cypress tree is most likely Venus, which would have appeared near this location according to van Gogh’s diary dates.

Remember to enjoy the night sky, it’s one of life’s greatest, yet simplest, sources of wonder.
